I had the honor of encountering Claudia Orengo, who sews custom bags and stuff of the sort. She took the time to answer some questions for me about herself and her work. Enjoy reading her story:
I am Claudia Orengo, I studied graphic design in Barcelona and Kolding (Denmark) and after working for different companies in Barcelona, I decided to quit my job move to Ibiza and start my own business.
Ibiza is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, 79 kilometers (49 miles) off the coast of the city of Valencia, in eastern Spain.
With stunning turquoise water and white sand, it’s easy to see why Ibiza is a popular holiday spot accommodating approximately 2.8 million tourists each year. Its magnificent architecture, coastline and sealife-inspired Claudia to create her amazing collection.
How did you first get started with your craft?
Since I was a kid, I’ve been interested in crafts and the fact that I studied and worked as a graphic designer made me love doing things with my hands even more. It was also a great way to escape from the computer routine.
So then a few years ago I started an online shop in Etsy with a friend, it was called Heartmade Soaps. It was a great time when we had to learn how to create handmade soaps and sell them online. We designed everything ourselves from soap covers, to tags and color and much more. It was very happy times. But after a year or so we decided to close the shop.
What is your favorite piece of work, and why?
When I quit my last job, I started learning to sew, and I felt it was a great moment to reopen Heartmade and sell my pencil cases. There was a pencil case that I designed with a retro map fabric that become popular, and still now it’s my best seller. my pencil case was also featured in Elle Magazine.
I’m a huge fan of fruits. I though that it would be an interesting piece to feature watermelon in my woven wall hanging to my supersize found out that it was published in “Patrones Extra” magazine.
We heard you are working on new Endless Summer Collection. So what is the Endless Summer Collection?
To explain that I have to explain a little about myself. I like to design and create things from my soul, and that means creating things that I love and getting inspiration from whatever I like and enjoy. If I had to define myself, I would say: I am a lover of colors, the sea, whales, Wes Anderson films, travels, and summer. I go crazy for cute donuts, macaroons, and candy. I just love them.
So Endless Summer is the expression of everything I love. I needed to design a collection of purses for fall and winter, but I always say I want to live on a tropical island because I hate cold days and I looooove summer. Then my boyfriend and I realized that the new Heartmade’s collection needed to be inspired by a summer that never ends. In having colorful and happy products with flowers, birds, sand and everything about summer even when it’s snowing outside.
That’s why my purses combine winter textures and materials with colorful patterns that remind us of summer days. There’s a product inspired by a cute pink donuts, made with faux fur fabric. Another one is a clear bag filled with sand. I also made a clutch combining a colorful tropical fabric with black fur…
With the perfect touch of craziness, Endless Summer Collection will definitely catch the eye of everyone, and that’s precisely what many are looking for. The winter collection features furry bags in bright colors, floral clutches, unisex leather wallets and much more.
Everything in my collection has been designed and produced by me in our home in Ibiza. All the materials are local, but since I’m a travel lover, I’ve recently lived in Berlin, Barcelona and currently call Ibiza home. This means that in my new collection there are fabrics from Barcelona and leathers from Germany and a final touch done in gorgeous Ibiza.
